Tumbleweedamericana – Amy Speace

9th April 2016 - 8:30 pm

Although she began her creative career in the theatre, acting with The National Shakespeare Company and various other classical repertory theatres, Amy Speace long ago left behind the stage to pursue music full time. She was discovered by Judy Collins and signed to Collins’ label, Wildflower Records, releasing two critically-acclaimed albums. Judy Collins herself recorded Amy’s song, “The Weight of the World,” calling it “one of the best political folk songs I’ve ever heard.”

Along the way, she gained support and praise from such legends as Guy Clark and Nanci Griffith, Ian Hunter and Alejandro Escovedo, an unlikely combination until you hear Amy’s songs

Her 2nd album and genre-hopping breakthrough effort, the 2006 ‘Songs for Bright Street’ on Collins’ label gained her widespread critical acclaim and a loyal international fan base, since when she’s released a further 4 albums of the highest quality culminating in 2015’s ‘That Kind of Girl’

In February 2016, Gearbox Records released “Applewood Road,” a collaboration between Amy, UK-based Emily Barker and Amber Rubarth. That set has already received high critical acclaim in the UK mainstream press.

There’s a lot of great music which slips by without people even knowing it’s there. Amy Speace is at the top of her game – we’re so happy to be able to add her name to the list of distinguished performers who have played for us on our Americana nights here at Seven Arts.

The 2015 album that touched my heart the most belonged to Amy Speace and the beautiful ‘That Kind of Girl’. The Nashville singer/songwriter has her lyrics dripping with emotion. The next time someone tells you they don’t make good music anymore, tell them they must not have heard of Amy Speace. ‘No Depression’ Americana magazine.
