What is a Science Slam? Expect quickfire science, short talks from six different speakers on six different topics. Each speaker has chosen a single image that will illustrate their talk. Their challenge is to explain what their graph / photo / diagram shows and why it is scientifically important – and to do that inside 5 minutes.
The six speakers and their subjects will be:
John Cossham – CO2 levels
David Sellers – An astronomical mystery
John Waterhouse – An astronomical triumph
Louise Richardson – Muscle stem cells
Luca Cantarello – Storms
Alan Kennedy – How the Earth has changed over time
You will have the chance to ask the speakers questions, and discuss which images were most effective in visualizing the data, displaying the research findings or telling the story.
Cafe Sci Leeds was set up to encourage understanding and debate about topical scientific research and issues in an informal setting. Speakers are invited to present a short talk on an area of science in which they have been involved which is then followed by questions and comments.
