Ray Brown launches his novel, ‘In All Beginnings’. Hosted by Mike McGowan, Ray will read, answer questions, sign books, and possibly tell one stunning joke.
Sex in the Seventies and love in the Eighties
The peace movement and the miners’ strike in Leeds
Pickets…pints and poems… Grosvenor Square… Greenham… Molesworth
Labour Party meetings… Non-violent direct action
Mid-night arrest… phone taps… laughter and tears
In 1984 areas of Britain resembled a police state. Simon and Lindy, ‘lovers against the bomb’, are peace activists drawn into the yearlong miners’ strike. For them it is a time of fear, laughter, homemade wine, and home grown dope. A world of collecting buckets and button badges, peace camps and picket lines, Labour Party meetings and Non Violent Direct Action workshops. It’s a time of constant opposition to the state. And a time of self discovery. Through it all Simon revisits the Seventies, his days of expensive haircuts and fawn safari suits, alcohol and affairs, and his first encounter with Lindy.
Combining acute observation with commentary and social satire, In All Beginnings’ captures the times and ends with an unexpected stylistic shift.
