One of the best albums of the 1980’s was the quartet led by John Scofield with Joe Lovano called “Time on my hands” and, with subtle changes to the bass and drum chairs, the group went in to the early 1990’s effectively defining a state of the art approach to jazz.
The John Scofield with Joe Lovano group went in to the early 1990’s effectively defining a state of the art approach to jazz.
It was also the group where drummer Bill Stewart first came to our attention and it seemed at the time that he was someone with a fresh and original approach to drumming. The combination of Lovano and Scofield is a match made in heaven and the partnership was renewed in 2016 on a new disc called “Past Present.”
With the passage of 25 years, the music still sounds amazingly fresh and affords the opportunity for Scofield to work in the more mainstream jazz context where his true worth shines through. This is one of the great partnerships in jazz. Lovano is a player who is capable of playing more “outside” more than many of his contemporaries. John Scofield’s recorded projects are just legendary.
The music is played by a quintet of some of the North’s finest musicians – Rod Mason, sax, Andrzej Baranek, keys/piano, Derrick Harris, guitar, John Chamberlain, bass and Paul Smith drums
